Gymnastics
b. 1880, Cleveland, OH
d. Aug. 28, 1960
At sixty-two, Hennig was the oldest candidate ever for the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete. He finished third in the 1942 voting.
Hennig got involved in gymnastics, particularly Indian clubs, on the advice of a doctor because he was a sickly youngster. He won two gold medals in the 1904 Olympics, in club swinging and the horizontal bar, where he tied with Anton Heida of the United States.
Over a period of nearly fifty years, Hennig won the national club swinging championship thirteen times; his last championship came when he was seventy-one years old, just nine years before his death. He was also national champion in the horizontal bars in 1911.
