The 6-foot-6, 267-pound Hennings won the 1987 Outland Trophy as the nation's outstanding collegiate lineman. A defensive tackle at the Air Force Academy, he was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1988 NFL draft, but had to serve in the Air Force for four years. After his discharge in 1992, he joined the Cowboys and was a part-time defensive linemen in their victories in Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII.
He then became a starter with the Cowboys for the rest of his career. Hennings retired after missing half of the 2000 season with injuries. In 119 NFL games, he had 28 sacks.
