Pete Herman

Herman became a professional boxer in 1912, when he was only sixteen, and he had several fights that are not officially recorded. On February 7, 1916, he met Kid Williams for the world bantamweight championship, but Williams retained his title with a 20-round draw.

They met again on January 9, 1917. This time Herman won a 20-round decision and the championship. After serving in the Navy during World War I, Herman lost the title to Joe Lynch in a 15-round decision on December 22, 1920.

Herman opened 1921 with five consecutive knockouts. He took a 15-round decision from Lynch on July 25 to reclaim the title, then lost it to Johnny Buff in a 15-round decision on September 23.

After five more fights, Herman was forced to retire because of failing eyesight caused by a ring injury. He went blind shortly afterward but operated a successful cafe in his native New Orleans until his death.

Herman won 71 of his 148 professional bouts, 19 by knockout, and lost 12, 1 by knockout. He also fought 10 draws and 57 no-decisions.
