Herschberger, Clarence
Football
b. 1877, Chicago, IL
d. Dec. 14, 1936
Herschberger was the first All-American player chosen by Walter Camp from outside the Ivy League, in 1898. A fullback at the University of Chicago, Herschberger was college football's outstanding kicker at a time when kicking was probably the most important element of the game.
He caught Camp's attention in a 23-11 loss to the University of Pennsylvania. Explaining his All-American selections, Camp wrote, "Against Penn this year, Herschberger exhibited the best all-around kicking of the season, punting, place-kicking and drop-kicking with equal accuracy and facility. . . . He is also a fine runner."
