After playing amateur hockey in Manitoba, Hextall became a professional with the Vancouver Lions in 1934 and joined the New York Rangers of the NHL in 1936. When the Rangers beat Toronto 4 games to 2 for the 1940 Stanley Cup, Hextall scored the goal that gave the Rangers a 3-2 overtime victory in the final game of the series.
Hextall won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer for the 1941-42 season, when he had 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points. He was among the top ten scorers three other times, and he was named the league's All-Star center three straight years, 1940-42.
Hextall retired after the 1947-48 season. In 447 regular-season games, all with the Rangers, he had 187 goals and 175 assists. He scored 8 goals and 9 assists in 37 playoff games.
His sons, Bryan Lee and Dennis, also played in the NHL.
