Heyman, Arthur B.
Basketball
b. June 29, 1941, Rockville Centre, NY
One of the finest players in Duke's glorious basketball history, Heyman was an All-American forward and won all the player of the year awards in 1963. He was also named most valuable player in the NCAA final tournament, although Duke lost to eventual champion Loyola of Chicago in a semi-final game.
During his three years as a starter, Heyman scored 1.984 points and averaged 25.1 per game, both school records at the time. The first draft choice of the NBA's New York Knicks, Heyman never became a professional star, although he averaged 15.4 points a game and made the league's all-rookie team in 1963-64.
The Knicks used him sparingly in his second season. In 1965-66 he was with both the Cincinnati Royals and the Philadelphia 76ers, but appeared in only 17 games.
After sitting out the 1966-67 season, Heyman joined the New Jersey Nets in the new American Basketball Association. The Nets traded him to the Pittsburgh Pipers shortly after the season started. Heyman had his best year as a professional, averaging 18.5 points a game, as Pittsburgh won the ABA championship.
Heyman went with the Pipers when they moved to Minnesota in 1967-68. He played just 19 games in 1969-70 with the Pittsburgh Condors and the Miami Floridians before a back injury forced his retirement. In 310 professional games, Heyman scored 4,030 points, an average of 13.0 points a game.
