Hinkle, Clarke (William Clarke)
Football
b. April 10, 1910, Toronto, OH
d. Nov. 9, 1988
Hinkle led Bucknell to a 20-5-3 record from 1929 through 1931, scoring 128 points, and he was the outstanding back in the 1932 East-West Shrine Game, where Green Bay Packer Coach "Curly" Lambeau scouted him and signed him immediately after the game.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Hinkle was devastating both as a runner and as a linebacker. He had some notable confrontations with Bronko Nagurski, his counterpart with the Chicago Bears, who outweighed him by 30 pounds.
On one occasion, Hinkle carried the ball through the line and was knocked into the backfield by Nagurski. But he didn't go down and he ran back through the hole and past Nagurski for a 56-yard touchdown.
Hinkle played for championship teams in 1936 and 1939 and was named an All-Pro from 1936 through 1938 and in 1941, his final season.
