Hollenback, "Bill" (William M.)
Football
b. Feb. 22, 1886, Blue Ball, PA
d. March 12, 1968
"Pudge" Heffelfinger called Hollenback "indestructible," which may not have been an overstatement. A halfback at the University of Pennsylvania, he once played an entire game with a slight fracture of the leg that wasn't discovered until afterward.
Known as "Big Bill," Hollenback was 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. Originally a tackle, he was moved to halfback in 1906 and he captained the team in 1907 and 1908. During those two seasons, Penn won 22 games, lost 1, and tied 1. Walter Camp named him a first-team All-American in 1908 after having placed him on the second team in 1906 and 1907.
After receiving a degree in dentistry, Hollenback coached Penn State in 1910 and from 1912 through 1914; at Missouri in 1910; at Pennsylvania Military College in 1915; and at Syracuse in 1916.
