Holmgren, Paul H.
Hockey
b. Dec. 2, 1955, St. Paul, MN
Holmgren played at the University of Minnesota in 1974-75, scoring 31 points in 37 games, and then joined the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the World Hockey Association. The team folded late in the season and Holmgren went to the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers for one game.
A right wing, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Holmgren became a regular with the Flyers in 1976-77 and was traded to the Minnesota North Stars late in the 1983-84 season. A recurring separated shoulder, which was operated on twice, forced his retirement in 1985, when he became an assistant coach with the Flyers.
Holmgren took over as the team's head coach in 1988 and was replaced early in the 1991-92 season. The following year, he became head coach of the Hartford Whalers. He had two coaching stints with Hartford, then returned to the Flyers' organization as a scout and as assistant general manger.
