An All-American halfback at Alabama in 1934, Howell saved his most brilliant performance for the 1935 Rose Bowl. In a 29-13 victory over Stanford, Howell scored touchdowns on runs of 5 and 67 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Don Hutson. He had 10 completions in 13 attempts for 210 yards, and he also returned 4 punts a total of 74 yards.
In his three years as a starter, Alabama had a 26-2-1 record as Howell passed for 3,947 yards and 43 touchdowns. He played for the NFL's Boston Redskins in 1936. They became the Washington Redskins in 1937, when they added Sammy Baugh, forcing Howell to the bench.
He coached Arizona State to a 23-15-4 record from 1938 through 1941. After four years in the service, he had a 13-20-1 record at the University of Idaho from 1947 through 1950.
