Howell, Lida (Scott)
Archery
b. Aug. 23, 1859
d. Dec. 20, 1933
Howell was by far the finest woman archer of her time. In her only chance at international competition, she won two gold medals in the 1904 Olympics, in the double national round and double Columbia round. She won seventeen national championships in twenty-five years of competition. And she set scoring records in 1895 that stood until 1931.
As Lida Scott, she won Ohio state championships in 1881 and 1882. She married Millard C. Howell in 1883 and won her first national title that year. Her other national championships came in 1885-8, 1890-93, 1895-96, 1898-1900, 1902-05, and 1907.
