Cycling was an unofficial sport at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. Hurley won all four races, at distances ranging from a quarter-mile to a mile.
The national amateur sprint champion four years in a row, from 1901 through 1904, he won the world championship in 1904. Hurley was the last American cyclist to win the world sprint title until 1994.
A basketball star at Columbia University, Hurley captained the team as a senior in 1907-08. He was also captain of a New York Athletic Club that won the Metropolitan championship tournament in 1905.
