Hutchison came to the United States in his late teens and settled in the Pittsburgh area. He won the Western Pennsylvania open five times between 1909 and 1915. Runner-up in both the U. S. Open and the PGA Championship in 1916, Hutchison won the PGA in 1920 and tied for second in the U. S. Open. He returned to his native St. Andrews in 1921 to win the British Open.
His last victory on the PGA tour came in the 1928 Belleair Open. Hutchison won the first Senior PGA Championship in 1937. He won it for a second time in 1947. In between those victories, he was the runner-up three times, in 1942, 1945, and 1946, twice losing in playoffs.
