Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame the first year it opened, Hyatt was a three-time All-American forward, 1928 through 1930, and was named the Helms Athletic Foundation player of the year as a senior. During his three years, Pittsburgh won 60 games and lost only 7, as Hyatt scored 880 points. He had 28 points in a 37-35 win over Montana State in his sophomore year, and he won the game with a basket with ten seconds to play.
Hyatt led the nation in scoring his last two seasons at Pittsburgh and then joined an AAU team, the Phillips 66 Oilers. He was an AAU All-American eight times and he was player-coach when the Oilers won the AAU national championship in 1940.
