Jeffires, Haywood F.
Football
b. Dec. 12, 1964, Greensboro, NC
The name looks like a misprint, but it isn't. Despite the spelling, it's pronounced "Jeffries." After playing at North Carolina State University, the 6-foot-2, 201-pound Jeffires was chosen by the Houston Oilers in the first round of the 1987 NFL draft.
A wide receiver, he caught only 9 passes in his first two seasons, in part because of an injury that limited him to only two games in 1988. The following year, he established himself as an excellent possession receiver who excelled at going over the middle and out-fighting defenders for the ball when necessary.
Jeffires led the league with 100 pass receptions in 1991 and he had 90 in 1992. Those numbers declined into the 60s for the next three seasons.
The Oilers cut him after the 1995 season. He retired after playing in just 9 games for the New Orleans Saints in 1996.
