Jenkins, David W.
Figure Skating
b. June 29, 1936, Toledo, OH
The younger brother of Hayes Alan Jenkins, David won twelve major championships in the four-year period from 1957 through 1960. He succeeded his brother as U. S. and world figure skating champion in 1957, when he also won the North American title, and he repeated in all three championships in 1958 and 1959.
He finished only second in the 1960 world championships, but he won the Olympic gold medal and both the U. S. and North American titles again. Jenkins trailed Karol Divin of Czechoslovakia after the compulsories at the Olympics, but put on a brilliant exhibition of free skating to win the first place ranking from all nine judges.
After graduating from Colorado College, Jenkins went to medical school and became a specialist in internal medicine.
