Jenkins, Hayes Alan
Figure Skating
b. March 23, 1933, Akron, OH
The young Jenkins skated in the shadow of Dick Button for several years but, after Button retired, he was unbeaten in major competition for four years. He won the U. S. and world championships from 1953 through 1956 and took an Olympic gold medal in 1956.
Although he lacked the flair of some other great skaters, Jenkins usually took a lead in the compulsory figures and held on to it with outstanding technique in his free skating. A graduate of Colorado College, he received a law degree from Harvard University and married Carol Heiss, the women's singles gold medalist in 1960.
His brother, David, succeeded him as U. S., world, and Olympic champion.
