Jennings, Morley (William Morley)
Football
b. Jan. 23, 1890, Holland, MI
d. May 13, 1985
After a year at Albion College in Michigan, Jennings went to Mississippi A & M (now Mississippi State), where he starred in baseball, basketball, football, and track. He graduated in 1912 and played professional baseball for eight years while also coaching college football.
Jennings had a 72-17-12 record at Ouachita College in Arkansas from 1912 through 1925 and then became head coach at Baylor. Many Southwest Conference schools emphasized the passing attack at that time, and Jennings was a pioneer in using a five-man defensive line in order to get seven players in the pass defense.
He coached at Baylor through 1940, compiling an 83-60-6 record. In 1941, Jennings became athletic director at Texas Tech. He left that position in 1950 but remained at the school as head of the physical education department until his retirement in 1965.
