Johnson won a total of eleven national championships in synchronized swimming, including four consecutive outdoor solo titles, from 1972 through 1975. She was the indoor solo champion in 1972 and 1972, she teamed with Teresa Andersen to win indoor and outdoor duet titles in 1972 and 1973, and in 1974 she and Sue Baross won the outdoor duet championship.
In 1975, Johnson won the world solo title and a gold medal in the solo event at the Pan-American Games.
