The son of Ben Jones, Jimmy worked as an assistant trainer with his father for many years, chiefly at Calumet Farm. He helped develop two triple crown winners, Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948.
His father became general manager of Calumet in 1948 and Jones took over as head trainer. Among the outstanding horses he produced were Iron Liege, winner of the 1957 Kentucky Derby, and Tim Tam, who was named the top 3-year-old in 1958 after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
Jones led all trainers in winnings from 1947 through 1949 and in 1957 and 1961. His horses won a total of 1,034 races and earned $12,792,676. He became director of racing at Monmouth Park in New Jersey in 1964.
