Julian, "Doggy" (Alvin F.)
Basketball
b. April 5, 1901, Reading, PA
d. July 28, 1967
After winning 10 letters in three sports at Bucknell University, Julian played minor-league baseball and semi-professional football for several years before going to Schuylkill (now Albright) College in Pennsylvania as football coach in 1925. Two years later, he became baseball and basketball coach as well.
In 1936, Julian became football and basketball coach at Muhlenberg College. He spent ten seasons there before moving to Holy Cross as basketball coach in 1945. His 1946-47 team won the NCAA championship. A year later, Holy Cross again went to the final four but lost to the University of Kentucky in the semi-finals.
Julian was persuaded to take over the Boston Celtics in 1948, but won only 47 games while losing 81 with a team that lacked both talent and money. He then returned to college coaching at Dartmouth, where he won three Ivy League titles. Julian suffered a stroke midway through the 1966-67 season and died six months later.
His overall college record was 386 wins and 343 losses.
