The 6-foot-3, 204-pound Kavanaugh was a fast, sure-handed receiver. He led the nation in receptions as a senior at Louisiana State University in 1939, catching passes for 469 yards in 9 games. Kavanaugh was named an All-American end and was the first winner of the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy as the top collegiate lineman in the country.

Kavanaugh joined the NFL's Chicago Bears in 1940. After military service from 1942 through 1944, he returned to the Bears in 1945 and played with them until his retirement after the 1950 season. He was named to the United Press All-Pro team in 1946 and was a consensus All-Pro in 1947.

In his eight professional seasons, Kavanaugh caught 162 passes for 3,622 yards, a 22.4 average, and 50 touchdowns.
