Ketcham, Henry H.
Football
b. June 17, 1891, Highwood, NJ
One of the first "roving centers," a kind of early version of the modern linebacker, Ketcham was an All-American at Yale in his junior season, 1912. The following season he was moved to guard and he made second-team All-American at that position.
Ketcham was 6 feet tall and weighed only 175 pounds, but was very fast and had a wiry strength that could surprise opposing blockers. As captain in 1913, Ketcham appointed Yale's first paid coach, Howard Jones. Up until then, the previous year's captain had always returned as a volunteer coach. Ketcham's move was, in part, a response to Harvard's having hired Percy Haughton as its first professional coach in 1908.
