One of only four athletes to win gold medals in two different sports, Kirksey was a member of the gold medal 4 by 100-meter relay team and he played on the gold medal U. S. rugby team at the 1920 Olympics. He also won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash.
Representing Stanford, Kirksey won the IC4A 100-yard championship in 1922 and 1923.
