Krzyzewski, "Mike" (Michael W.)
Basketball
b. Feb. 13, 1947, Chicago, IL
The name is pronounced "Roo-shevski," but his players call him "Coach K." Krzyzewski played basketball for Bobby Knight at the U. S. Military Academy, graduating in 1969. He coached service teams during his stint in the Army, then became head coach at the U. S. Military Academy Prep School for three seasons.
He rejoined Knight as an assistant coach at Indiana in 1975 and then became head coach at Army. In five seasons there, his teams won 73 games, losing 59, and twice went to the National Invitation Tournament.
Krzyzewski was named coach at Duke University in 1981. After two years of rebuilding the program, the team won 20 games in 1983-84 and went to the NCAA tournament. Duke has won 20 or more games and played in the NCAA every year since then, with nine appearances in the final four and three championships, in 1991, 1992, and 2001. The 1985-86 team set an NCAA record with 37 victories.
Through 2003-04, Coach K had a record of 694-240, for a winning percentage of .743. His teams have gone 64-17 in 20 NCAA tournament appearances.
