Kummer, Clarence
Horse Racing
b. Aug. 8, 1899, New York, NY
d. Dec. 18, 1930
Best known as Man o'War's jockey in 1920, Kummer took over after Johnny Loftus was denied a license because he was suspected of having thrown a race, Man o'War's defeat by Upset in the 1919 Sanford Stakes.
Kummer rode Man o'War to nine wins in nine starts, including the Preakness and the Belmont. (The horse didn't run in the Kentucky Derby.) He had 78 other victories that year and led all jockeys in winnings with $292,376. Kummer also won the 1925 Preakness aboard Coventry and the 1928 Belmont aboard Vito.
Because of weight problems, Kummer didn't have any rides in 1929. He died of pneumonia, possibly because he had weakened his constitution by losing weight for a comeback attempt.
In his 13-year career, Kummer rode 464 winners in 2,468 mounts, an 18.8 winning percentage.
