Nicknamed the "Dutchman," Kurtsinger won the Kentucky Derby twice, aboard Twenty Grand in 1931 and War Admiral in 1937. With Kurtsinger aboard, War Admiral also won the Preakness and Belmont to become the fourth triple crown winner in history.
Twenty Grand also won the 1931 Belmont but finished second in the Preakness. After losing by a nose in the Kentucky Derby, Kurtsinger rode Head Play to victory in the 1933 Preakness.
After a fall in 1938, Kurtsinger retired to become a trainer, although he rode briefly in 1939. He died of complications from pneumonia. Kurtsinger was the leading money winner in 1931 and in 1937.
In his 15-year career, Kurtsinger rode 721 winners in 5,651 mounts, a 12.4 winning percentage.
