Largent, Steve M.
Football
b. Sept. 28, 1954, Tulsa, OK
At Tulsa University, Largent caught 126 passes for 2,385 yards and 32 touchdown in three seasons as a starter. He led the nation in touchdown passes caught with 14 in both 1974 and 1975.
The NFL's Houston Oilers drafted him in 1976 but he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks before the season began. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Largent lacked great speed, but he ran very precise pass routes, was very sure-handed, and was also remarkably durable despite his size.
Every year from 1978 through 1986, except for the strike-shortened 1982 season, he caught at least 66 passes and gained more than 1,000 yards on receptions.
An All-Pro in 1985 and 1987, Largent played in seven Pro Bowls. He missed six games with a broken elbow in 1989 and retired after that season, holding NFL records for most consecutive games with a reception, 177; most seasons with 50 or more receptions, 8; most passes caught, 819; most yards on receptions, 13,089; and most touchdown passes, 100. Those records have since been broken.
After retiring, Largent served six years an Oklahoma representative in the U. S. Congress.
