Running for the University of Indiana, Lash was the NCAA 5,000-meter champion and the AAU 3-mile and 6-mile champion in 1936. He set a world record of 8:58.4 in the 2-mile on June 13 of that year.
Lash also won the AAU 6-mile championship in 1940 and the indoor 3-mile titles in 1938 and 1939. He was the national cross-country champion seven consecutive years, from 1934 through 1940. He won the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete in 1938.
