A hockey and lacrosse star with the Montreal Nationales in the early part of the 20th century, Laviolette in 1904 joined the professional team in Sault ste. Marie, MI. In 1909, he organized a team of French Canadians; that team became the Montreal Canadiens in 1913.
Originally a defenseman, Laviolette moved to forward in the latter part of his career. He played with the Canadiens during their first season in the NHL, 1917-18, and then retired. Laviolette lost a foot in an accident the following year, yet he later became a referee.
