Lindsay, "Ted" (Robert Blake Theodore)
Hockey
b. July 29, 1925, Renfrew, ONT
"Terrible Tempered Ted" was a hockey rarity, a fierce brawler who was also an outstanding scorer. When he retired, he held NHL records for most goals and most assists by a left wing and for most minutes spent in the penalty box by any player.
The son of a rink operator in Kirkland Lake, ONT, Lindsay played amateur hockey there until joining the Detroit Red Wings in 1944. For most of his career with Detroit, he was on the "Production Line" with Gordie Howe at right wing and first Sid Abel, then Alex Delvecchio, at center.
Lindsay led the league in scoring with 23 goals and 55 assists in 1948-49 and was among the top ten scorers seven other times. Though only 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, he also acquired the nickname "Scarface" because of his frequent fights; he once said he stopped counting his stitches when he got to four hundred.
Traded to the Chicago Black Hawks in 1957, Lindsay retired in 1960 but returned to Detroit for one more season in 1964-65. During his first stint with the Red Wings, they won eight regular season championships and four Stanley Cup titles. In his comeback season, they won their first regular season championship in eight years.
Lindsay scored 379 goals and had 427 assists in 1068 regular season games and had 47 goals and 49 assists in 133 playoff games.
