Locke starred for Iowa teams that won 17 consecutive games, including undefeated seasons in 1921 and 1922. He captained the team in 1922, when a set a Big Ten scoring record with 72 points on 12 touchdowns in only five conference games. The record stood until 1943.
After graduating in 1923, Locke served as an assistant coach while attending law school. Later, he coached football at Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
