b. March 16, 1899, Horton, KS
d. Jan. 31, 1985
One of many coaches who played for "Phog" Allen at the University of Kansas, Lonborg also took part in baseball and football. He was an AAU All-American guard with the Kansas City Athletic Club in 1921 and then became coach of all team sports at McPherson College in Kansas. He had a record of 23 wins and 4 losses in two seasons and then went to Washburn University in Topeka.
Washburn won the 1925 AAU national championship, the last college team to accomplish that, as Lonborg compiled a 63-15 record in four seasons before becoming head coach at Northwestern University in 1927.
Northwestern had its first successful seasons under Lonborg, winning the 1931 Western Conference (now Big Ten) championship and tying for the 1933 title. He had a record of 237 wins and 198 losses at the school, for an overall mark of 324-225. In 1950, he became athletic director at Kansas. Lonborg retired in 1964.
