The second highest ground gainer in American Football League history, Lowe played at Oregon State and joined the Los Angeles Chargers as a free agent in 1960. He quickly became one of the biggest stars in the offense-oriented AFL, averaging 6.3 yards a carry while gaining 855 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns.
The Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961, when Lowe led the league with 9 rushing touchdowns. After missing the 1962 season with an injury, he gained 1,010 yards on 177 rushing attempts, a 5.7 average, and scored 8 rushing touchdowns in 1963.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Lowe was named the league's player of the year in 1965, when he had a record 1,121 yards in 222 carries, a 5.1 average, with 7 touchdowns rushing. He went to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1968 and spent two seasons there before retiring.
In his 10 years, Lowe rushed 1,026 times for 4,995 yards, a 4.9 average, and 40 touchdowns. He also caught 111 passes for 1,045 yards, a 9.4 average, and 7 touchdowns.
