The winner of 15 Canadian diving championships from 1951 through 1961, MacDonald won a bronze medal in the springboard competition at the 1956 Olympics. She was the U. S. outdoor 1-meter and 3-meter springboard champion in 1959 and she also won indoor titles in the 1-meter in 1959, the 3-meter in 1960.
After retiring from competition in 1962, MacDonald became a very successful coach. She coached the Canadian women's diving team for the 1966 Commonwealth Games, the 1971 European tour, and the world championships from 1973 through 1975.
