Magee, "Sherry" (Sherwood R.)
Baseball
b. Aug. 6, 1884, Clarendon, PA
d. March 13, 1929
A switch-hitting outfielder who threw right-handed, Magee won a batting championship and led the National League in RBI four times in the early part of the century. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies early in the 1904 season and won his first RBI title with 85 in 1907.
Magee's finest year was 1910, when he led in hitting with a .331 average, in slugging with a .507 percentage, in runs with 110 and in RBI with 123.
The following year, Magee threw his bat into the air after being called out on strikes in a July 10 game. Umpire Bill Finneran threw him out of the game. Magee hit Finneran in the mouth, cutting him badly. He was escorted from the park by police while Finneran was taken to a hospital to have the injury cared for. Magee was fined $200 and suspended for the rest of the season. However, he was reinstated in the middle of August because the Philadelphia roster had been depleted by injuries.
After he led the league in hits with 171, doubles with 39, and RBI with 103 in 1914, Magee was traded to the Boston Braves. During the 1917 season, the Braves sent him to the Cincinnati Reds. He won his fourth and last RBI title with 76 in 1918, when the season was shortened because of World War I.
Magee retired after the 1919 season. In 2,087 games, he batted .291 with 2,169 hits, including 425 doubles, 166 triples, and 83 home runs. He stole 441 bases, scored 1,112 runs, and had 1,176 RBI.
