The top steeplechaser in the U. S. during the 1980s, Marsh attended Brigham Young University. He never won an NCAA championship, finishing second in 1976 and third in both 1977 and 1978, but he won the national 3,000-meter steeplechase championship ten years in a row, from 1978 through 1987.
Marsh's time of 8:09.17 in 1985 is an American record. His best international finish was a second place in the World Cup competition that year. Marsh finished 4th in the 1979 World Cup, 4th at the 1984 Olympics, and 6th in the 1987 World Championships.
