McClung, "Bum" (Thomas Lee)
Football
b. March 26, 1870, Knoxville, TN
d. Dec. 19, 1914
Though not very fast, McClung was a smart, shifty runner who scored somewhere around 500 points in four years as a starting halfback at Yale. He captained the 1891 team, which won all 13 of its games, outscoring the opposition 488 to 0.
The captain at that time was virtually a coach. McClung is credited with designing the cutback play, in which the runner looks as if he's going to go around end and then cuts back over tackle. The cutback later became a standard play in the single wing.
In 1892, McClung became the first football coach at the University of California. The team had won 2, lost 1, and tied 1 in his only season there. He was U. S. treasurer from 1909 to 1912.
