McColl, "Bill" (William F. Jr.)
Football
b. April 20, 1930, San Diego, CA
While he was playing at Stanford, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound McColl was called by sportswriter Curley Grieve "a giant end stamped with greatness." A consensus All-American in 1950 and 1951, he played both offense and defense and was sometimes used at tackle because of his size and at linebacker because of his speed.
McColl joined the NFL's Chicago Bears in 1952 and studied toward a medical degree at the University of Chicago. He received the degree in 1955 and retired from football after the 1959 season to practice medicine.
During his 8-year professional career, McColl caught 301 passes for 2,815 yards, a 9.4 average, and 25 touchdowns. Two of his sons, Duncan and Milton, played football at Stanford and also played professional football.
