An unspectacular journeyman pitcher for most of his career, the left-handed McCormick led the National League with a 2.70 ERA in 1960 and won the league's Cy Young Award in 1967, when he also led the league in victories with a 22-10 record, posting 5 shutouts and a 2.85 ERA for the San Francisco Giants.
McCormick pitched briefly for the Giants in 1956 and 1957 and became a regular starter in 1958, when he was 11-8. He developed arm trouble in 1962 and was traded to the Baltimore Orioles the following year. After appearing in only 4 games with Baltimore in 1964, he went to Washington Senators for two seasons, then returned to San Francisco and had his Cy Young season.
He had a record of 12-14 in 1968 and was 11-9 in 1969. He pitched for both the Giants and the New York Yankees in 1970 and finished his career with the Kansas City Athletics in 1971.
In 16 seasons, McCormick had a 134-128 record with 23 shutouts and a 3.73 ERA. He struck out 1,321 hitters and walked 795 in 2,380 1/3 innings.
