Horse Racing
b. 1921, St. Louis, MO
d. June 29, 1979
Although he begin riding in 1937, McCreary didn't have a major victory until 1941, when he rode Our Boots to an upset over Whirlaway in the Blue Grass Stakes. In 1944, he won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness aboard Pensive, but fell short of the triple crown by a half-length in the Belmont.
McCreary's greatest ride was undoubtedly his win in the 1951 Kentucky Derby with Count Turf. Running sixteenth and apparently hopelessly blocked by a large field, McCreary somehow threaded his way through the pack to take fourth at the beginning of the stretch, and he then took Count Turf to the outside and drove to a four-length victory.
He won his fourth triple crown race with Blue Man in the 1952 Preakness. He won his fourth triple crown race with Blue Man in the 1952 Preakness. McCreary retired from riding in 1957 and later worked as a trainer and track publicity man.
During his career, he rode 1,263 winners out of 8,881 mounts, a 14.2 winning percentage.
