An All-American guard at the University of Texas in 1950, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound McFadin served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict, then joined the NFL's Los Angeles Rams as a middle guard and linebacker during the 1952 season. He was moved to defensive tackle in 1955.
McFadin retired from football after being injured in a freak shooting accident in 1956. When the American Football League was established in 1960, he came out of retirement to play for the Denver Broncos. In 1964, he went to the Houston Oilers. He spent two seasons there before retiring to become the team's defensive line coach. He was named to the All-AFL team in 1960 and 1961.
