Career Record
Other Resources
Probably the greatest fighter who never held a championship, McFarland built an incredible record during his twelve-year career but never even got a title shot.
He began fighting professionally in 1904 and was knocked out by Dusty Miller in the 5th round in his last fight that year. It was the only loss he ever suffered. The 5-foot-8 McFarland, who fought at between 130 and 140 pounds, had a devastating punch. From 1905 to 1907, he won 36 fights in a row, 27 by knockout.
In 1908, he won a decision over Freddie Welsh, who later became lightweight champion, and he also had no-decisions against Welsh in 1909 and 1910. His last fight was a no-decision in 1915 against Jack Britton, who later won the world welterweight title.
McFarland then retired from boxing and became a successful businessman in Joliet, IL. He won 64 bouts, 47 by knockout; lost only 1, by knockout; and fought 5 draws and 34 no-decisions.
