McGovern, John F.
Football
b. Sept. 15, 1887, Arlington, MN
d. Dec. 14, 1963
The first University of Minnesota player to be named an All-American, McGovern was a three-year starter at quarterback. Working in Henry L. Williams' innovative shift, he was vitally important as a signal-caller, but he could also run, pass, and kick.
McGovern drop-kicked three field goals in a 20-6 win over the University of Chicago in 1909, his All-American season. As a senior in 1910, he was a third-team member of Walter Camp's All-American squad. During his career, Minnesota won 15 games, lost 4, and tied 1.
