McKinney, "Rick" (Richard)
Archery
b. 1955, Muncie, IN
McKinney and Darrell Pace grew up less than a hundred miles apart and they had a long rivalry as competitive archers. In 1975, McKinney finished failed to make the U. S. national team, finishing one point behind Pace in the trials. Pace went on to win the world championship.
In 1977, McKinney beat Pace to win his first national title and he also won the world championship that year. Pace reclaimed the U. S. championship in 1978, but McKinney won the next five years in a row, from 1979 through 1983. He and Pace went to the last arrow in the 1983 world championship, with McKinney hitting a 10 to Pace's 9 to win the title.
After finishing second to Pace in the national championship and the Olympics in 1984, McKinney won three more national titles, from 1985 through 1987, and then retired from competition.
