McKinney, Tamara
Skiing
b. Oct. 16, 1962, Lexington, KY
A seven-time winner of the U. S. slalom championship, from 1982 through 1984 and from 1986 through 1989, McKinney is the only American woman ever to win the World Cup for Alpine skiing.
The 5-foot-4, 117-pound McKinney generates tremendous speed and attacks courses with a boldness that verges on recklessness. At the 1980 Olympics, she was considered a medal contender, but she fell in both the slalom and the giant slalom, failing to place.
McKinney came back in 1981 to win the World Cup championship in the giant slalom. She was overall World Cup champion in 1983 and the slalom World Cup winner in 1984.
