McLaughry, "Tuss" (DeOrmond)
Football
b. 1883, Chicago, IL
d. Nov. 26, 1974
After playing guard, tackle, and end at Michigan State for two seasons, McLaughry transferred to Westminster College and captained the 1914 team. He coached there in 1916 and 1917, spent two years in the service, and returned for two more seasons of coaching in 1920 and 1921.
At Amherst College from 1922 through 1925, McLaughry had a 21-8-3 record. He went to Brown University in 1926 and remained there for 15 seasons, winning 76 games, losing 58, and tying 5. His 1926 team went undefeated, winning its first 9 games and playing a scoreless tie with Colgate in the final game of the season.
All eleven starters played sixty minutes in consecutive games against Yale and Dartmouth. They became known as the "Iron Men." In the third game, against Harvard, they played the first fifty-five minutes before McLaughry made a substitution.
In 1941, McLaughry moved on to Dartmouth. Except for 1943 and 1944, when he was in the Marines, McLaughry coached there through 1954. His Dartmouth teams won 44, lost 58, and tied 3. In 1955, he was named professor of physical education. He held that post until 1960, when he became the first full-time executive director of the American Football Coaches Association.
