Chosen out of the University of Texas by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 1980 NFL draft, McMichael missed most of his rookie season with a back injury and was released.
The Chicago Bears picked him up during the 1981 season. McMichael became a starter at defensive tackle in 1985 and was a key player in the outstanding defense that helped the Bears win the 1985 NFL championship by beating the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.
McMichael went to the Green Bay Packers as a free agent in 1994 and retired after just one season there.
A fierce competitor, the 6-foot-2, 268-pound McMichael was very agile agile. In 213 NFL games, he recorded 95 quarterback sacks, 12 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, and 3 safeties.
McMichael was named to The Sporting News all-pro team and played in the Pro Bowl in 1986 and 1987.
