Meggett, "Dave" (David L.)
Football
b. April 30, 1966, Charleston, SC
Meggett was a running back at Morgan State and Towson State. As a Towson senior in 1988, he won the Walter Payton Award as the nation's outstanding offensive Division IAA football player. The New York Giants chose him in the fifth round of the 1989 NFL draft.
Only 5-foot-7 and 180 pounds, Meggett was a versatile performer for the Giants as a kick returner and pass receiver out of the backfield, especially on third-down situations.
He led the NFL in punt return yardage with 582 yards in 1989 and 467 yards in 1990, when he was named to The Sporting News all-pro team. In 1993, he became one of the few NFL players ever to gain more than 300 yards rushing, receiving and returning kicks. Meggett played for the Giants in their victory in Super Bowl XXV.
Meggett became one of Coach Bill Parcells' favorite players with the Giants. Parcells went to the New England Patriots in 1993 and signed Meggett as a free agent two years later. With New England, Meggett played in a second Super Bowl, a loss to the Green Bay Packers.
In 1997, Parcells became coach of the New York Jets and he again signed Meggett as a free agent the following year. However, injuries limited Meggett to just two games and he retired after that season.
