Melges won the Mallory Cup, emblematic of the North American sailing championship, a record three years in a row, 1959 through 1961. With William Bentsen and William Allen as crew members, he took the gold medal in the soling class at the 1972 Olympics, finishing first in three of the six races with a second-, a third-, and a fourth-place finish to score 8.7 points to 31.7 for the silver medalist.
He and Bentsen had won a bronze in the Flying Dutchman Class in 1964. Melges was co-skipper, with Bill Koch, of America3 when she defended the America's Cup against the Italian challenger Il Moro di Vinezia in 1992.
